Re: #5843 from MARK T ENGLISH on June 15, 1998 in ECULAUGH
Any posting that starts/needs "true story" is suspected as being an
illustration and not good clean religious humor.
Any posting that invites "have a field day with its application" is
suspected as an illustration (BOTTOM DRAWER) not Good Clean Religious
Humor.
In my opinion, flawed as that is, your post is an humorous illustration
(BOTTOM DRAWER?) and funny (JOKES?). That is not enough for ECULAUGH,
which is GOOD CLEAN RELIGIOUS HUMOR, (all four).
It was removed and returned because I detect no religious reference
necessary to the humor. It would help me be a better moderator if you could
point out the religious part necessary to "get" the humor. Perhaps being
helpful is not your goal.
I'm having a very nice break at General Assembly in Charlotte. Thanks for
your concern and for your comment here in ECULAUGH COMMENTS.

True story--
Pulling aside for a firetruck, my car gets stuck (slipping down to
under-construction shoulder). It's raining buckets. I go to one house, 2
houses. Finally 3rd house has somebody home. He's already called police
(yay!). I ask to use phone to call wife. OK. I ask to use bathroom. OK.
I go out to car when I see cop car (which keeps on going). I go back to
house--I ask to use phone to call AAA. Won't let me in.

Hail, that's exactly what I said 4 years ago. And, I'm now working
outside the church in a secular job so that I can supplement my income as a
pastor. What's so unusual about that?

Mr. Ramsey...
What, pray tell, is going on in ECULAUGH? I am highly surprised that
you let note #5860 from KIM HARANO on to the meeting. This doesn't seem to
meet the criteria for the meeting, for there is nothing humorous about
Kim's "rebuttal." The "pastor" lines have no elements of humor but seem
rather to be a mean-spirited shot at the clergy. There are no elements of
satire as there were in Linda Craft's note. I am going to assume that you
are or were on vacation and Kim's note slipped by you. At least that will
be my hope.

Regarding the copyright question, what exactly is copyrighted about
Eculaugh--every post, your posts, nothing, some things?
Would appreciate it if you could clarify.
Many thanks,
Joe

Lots of merit in your note MITCH. Being a pastor I was trying to have a
thick skin. I've reviewed it again and will look at it once more. May still
remove and return it.
Thanks for the catch.
I re-read it and you're right. It isn't humorous. I removed it.

From "Copyrights" I saw:
" All notes I write under any inbox name are considered published material
and copyrighted the year written."
and then nothing to this point on the Faq Eculaugh, so my conclusion is that
only items posted under your inbox name(s) are copyrighted. If it says
someone else's name and not yours it is not copyrighted as I read that.
Thanks,
Joe

Note #1 has a large section on COPYRIGHT. It isn't an active meeting, one
has to request note #1, (but you obviously did so to get note #20 of
COPYRIGHTS) I'll check.

Glad to hear from Mitch on that note. I understood the person's concern but
as he and you both said, and I thought to myself, "This isn't really
funny." I'll have to ponder a while and thing of some things parishioners
might think are signs of the world coming to end that pastors say -- that
are truly funny. Like: "Sure, you can come and live with me any time." Or
"Yes, I have the Bible memorized from cover to cover and I believe every
word of it is inerrant and inspired by God." Or, "You are absolutely right,
I don't deserve as much salary as I get. Let's give me a $2,000 decrease!"
Or "I'd be delighted to give a two-minute sermon every Sunday!"
Heck, these aren't even that funny.
Oh, well.
It's the ones whose notes that get "dumped" that need the thicker skin. I
know. I've been there! <VBG>

Thanks, JC. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't setting myself or someone else up
by passing along a bit of light for their day. Indeed, if I should copy your
prayer(s) I shall give appropriate due. We do appreciate your
meeting--several have commented positively about it to me, and hopefully to
you. If the Iowa thing comes about we hope you will continue. Otherwise, too
much gloom and doom to face without light, life, and a smile.

EDICT FROM HIS MAJESTY
Read note #0 of "JOKES" and you will see that religious jokes are for
"ECULAUGH", not jokes.
I decree that that rule is hereafter to be ignored.
Reason: Not all religious-based humor is appropriate for "ECULAUGH" as the
FAQ must be strictly interpreted. THEREFORE, TO WIT AMD IN TASTE, "JOKES"
will welcome "ECULAUGH" rejects so long as they are of a nature that, though
not perhaps appropriate for a sermon illustration, would be appropriate for a
church board meeting provided the right people are absent.

Thanks for the reference DAVID.
ECULAUGH's religious requirement does not refer to whether a joke is for a
sermon illustration. Just because a joke is told in a church doesn't make
the joke religious (same for people but that is another meeting)
Religious in the small world of ECULAUGH humor that needs the religious
reference to make sense or be humorous. More than you want to know in FAQ
ECULAUGH Note #1 or on the web off the ECULAUGH pages on the Resource
section of www.pcusa.org
